Understanding Problems on Ages (Beginner-Friendly Guide)

Question

Problems on ages may look tricky at first, but once you understand the pattern, they become very easy. The key idea is that age changes uniformly with time. That means every person’s age increases or decreases by the same number of years when we move forward or backward in time.

Core Idea: Past, Present, and Future

Every age problem revolves around three time points:

Present: Current age (unknown or given)
Past: Subtract years → $ \displaystyle \text{Present age} - t $
Future: Add years → $ \displaystyle \text{Present age} + t $

For example, if someone is $ \displaystyle x $ years old now:

$$ \text{Past age (t years ago)} = \displaystyle x - t $$ $$ \text{Future age (t years later)} = \displaystyle x + t $$

This is the foundation of all age problems.

Step-by-Step Method to Solve Age Problems

Step 1: Assign variables (e.g., $ \displaystyle x, y $) to present ages.
Step 2: Convert past/future statements into equations.
Step 3: Solve the equations.
Step 4: Interpret the result.

Common Shortcut Concept: "n Times" Relationship

If one person's age is $ \displaystyle n $ times another person's age, then:

$$ \text{Age of A} = \displaystyle n \times \text{Age of B} $$

When time shifts, apply the same rule to adjusted ages.

Example 1: Father and Son Problem

Question: A father is $ \displaystyle 4 $ times as old as his son. Five years ago, he was $ \displaystyle 7 $ times as old as his son. Find the father's present age.

Solution:

Let the son's present age be $ \displaystyle x $.
Then father's present age = $ \displaystyle 4x $.

Five years ago:

$$ \text{Father's age} = \displaystyle 4x - 5 $$ $$ \text{Son's age} = \displaystyle x - 5 $$

According to the question:

$$ 4x - 5 = \displaystyle 7(x - 5) $$

Solve:

$$ 4x - 5 = \displaystyle 7x - 35 $$ $$ 30 = \displaystyle 3x $$ $$ x = \displaystyle 10 $$

Father’s present age:

$$ 4x = \displaystyle 4 \times 10 = 40 $$

Answer: Father is $ \displaystyle 40 $ years old.

Example 2: Sum of Ages Problem

Question: The sum of ages of a father and son is $ \displaystyle 56 $ years. After $ \displaystyle 4 $ years, the father will be $ \displaystyle 3 $ times as old as the son. Find their present ages.

Solution:

Let father's age = $ \displaystyle x $, son's age = $ \displaystyle y $.

From the sum:

$$ x + y = \displaystyle 56 $$

After 4 years:

$$ x + 4 = \displaystyle 3(y + 4) $$

Simplify:

$$ x + 4 = \displaystyle 3y + 12 $$ $$ x = \displaystyle 3y + 8 $$

Substitute into first equation:

$$ 3y + 8 + y = \displaystyle 56 $$ $$ 4y = \displaystyle 48 $$ $$ y = \displaystyle 12 $$ $$ x = \displaystyle 56 - 12 = 44 $$

Answer: Father = $ \displaystyle 44 $ years, Son = $ \displaystyle 12 $ years.

Ratio-Based Shortcut

If the ratio of present ages is $ \displaystyle a:b $, you can write:

$$ \text{A's age} = \displaystyle ax, \quad \text{B's age} = \displaystyle bx $$

Then use future or past conditions to form equations.

Example 3: Ratio Change Problem

Question: The ratio of father’s age to son’s age is $ \displaystyle 6:1 $. After 5 years, it becomes $ \displaystyle 7:2 $. Find the son’s present age.

Solution:

Let present ages be:

$$ \text{Father} = \displaystyle 6x, \quad \text{Son} = \displaystyle x $$

After 5 years:

$$ \frac{6x + 5}{x + 5} = \displaystyle \frac{7}{2} $$

Cross multiply:

$$ 2(6x + 5) = \displaystyle 7(x + 5) $$ $$ 12x + 10 = \displaystyle 7x + 35 $$ $$ 5x = \displaystyle 25 $$ $$ x = \displaystyle 5 $$

Answer: Son is $ \displaystyle 5 $ years old.

Important Tips to Remember

1. Always assume present ages first.
2. Convert words into equations carefully.
3. Keep track of time (past or future).
4. Ratios simplify problems a lot.
5. Practice regularly to master patterns.

Age problems are just about translating words into simple equations. Once you understand the time shift idea and practice a few examples, you will solve them very quickly and confidently.
